The “Skilled Worker” Application

There are two steps for this application. First you have to be found eligible to apply. If you are eligible then you are assessed under a point system. In most cases, you will get your visa within one year of applying in this category.

To be found eligible you must have work experience that is on a list of jobs or you must have worked or studied in Canada for a year or you must have a government-approved job offer. You are found eligible or rejected within three months of applying.

If you are found eligible then you are assessed under a point system where you are awarded “points” for the various factors below.  This process takes about 6-9 months. Each factor has different rules for getting points. If you get 67 points you are allowed to immigrate.

• The higher your level of education or training and your total years of education, the more points you get up to a maximum of 25 points.
• You are awarded points for up to four years of work experience in a high skilled occupation within the past 10 years up to a maximum of 21 points.
• The better you are at English and French language skills, the more points you get up to a maximum of 24 points. To get points in your second language you are usually required to pass a difficult language test.
• The closer your age is to between 21 and 49, the more points you get.
• If you or your spouse have a relative in Canada who will help you to settle in Canada, you get up to 5 points.
• If you or your spouse have worked or studied in Canada, then you get up to 5 points.
• If you have a job in Canada that has been approved by the government, then you get up to 15 points.

If you pass this stage then you must do your medical and security clearances.
